UP launches two books

The UP Center for Women’s Studies announces the completion of its two projects on gender in Philippine judicial system with the publication of two books, namely, Engendering the Philippine Judiciary by Rowena V. Guanzon, Aurora Javate-De Dios, Damcelle S. Torres, and Theresa D. Balayon, and The Davide Court: Its Contributions to Gender and Women’s Rights, by Rowena V. Guanzon, Juline R. Dulnuan, Nicolas B. Pichay, Maria Cecilia D. Papa, and Damcelle S. Torres. Launching is set on December 14, 2006, at the Sampaguita Hall of the Manila Hotel, from 2:00 to 5:00 P.M.

Supreme Court Justice Leonardo V. Quisumbing will give the Message, while Justice Ma. Alicia Austria-Martinez, Chair of Committee on Gender Responsiveness, will deliver the Response.

The first book discusses the problem of gender discrimination in the courts and offers gender analyses as a tool for judges. This is a good advocacy material for promoting gender sensitivity and judicial reform in the Philippine court system. It also exemplifies the use of the CEDAW Framework in Philippine jurisprudence and in other jurisdictions, and includes case digests of Supreme Court decisions on violence against women. The second reviews the contributions to Gender and Development (GAD) of the justice system under the term of Chief Justice Hilario G. Davide, Jr.
