Last October 10, 2009, our Local Government class visited Bgy. Martirez del 96 in Pateros to conduct a brief seminar about the Anti-Violence Against Women and their Children Act. There were almost 150 women in attendance to learn about their rights against all forms of violence. Attorney Rowena Guanzon as guest speaker delved on the different remedies that women who experience violence can avail of under the law. One of these remedies is the Barangay Protection Order. An open forum where we, as students of the law, were able to acquaint ourselves with real life problems and situations different women experience followed the seminar. To most of the women who participated, they welcomed the opportunity to talk about various abuses that either someone they know or they themselves suffer from. More than the new found legal knowledge, it was the feeling that they are not alone in their struggles which uplifted most of them. Violence against women is a societal problem and that we all have a stake in it. This is what I learned from this out-of-the-classroom activity.
