Twenty -eight years after I enrolled in 1980, at least four of my professors (Profs. Sison, Labitag,Balane and Dean Carale)  are still teaching, the oldest being Prof. Araceli Baviera who at 89, still teaches Sales. I celebrated my birthday with them by hosting a  lunch in the faculty room. My classmates Popo Lotilla and Nonoy Dizon joined us.

Next year, my UP Law Class 84 will celebrate our 25th year!

We the members of the Asia Cause Lawyers Network view with grave concern the recent actions against the judiciary and the?legal community in Pakistan. An independent Judiciary& a Bar and a free Press are the hallmarks of a Democracy. The arrests of judges, lawyers, journalists, human rights activists and political opponents for protesting to protect Rule of Law and against suspension of people’s freedoms is a direct assault on Democracy and we deplore such actions. The ASIA CAUSE LAWYERS NETWORK stands in solidarity with the members of the judiciary, legal fraternity, the media & the civil society of Pakistan in this hour of crisis. We call for immediate release of those arrested as a first step to restoration of the Rule of Law and call upon the civil society all over the world to stand united with the people of Pakistan to resist the erosions to their freedom and demand the immediate release of those arrested as a first step towards restoration of Rule of Law.

Background: see previous entry on Rosalie Garcia. Her estranged husband filed a petition attacking the constituitonality of Republic Act No. 9262, the Anti-VAW Act of 2004.  the court of Appeals dsimissed his petition. He filed a petition for review in the Supreme Court.

Among others, Sandra Fredman, a professor in Oxford Univesity, gave a lecture of the meaning of “equality” under the CEDAW.  Savitri Gonnesekre, professor of law in Colombo University, presented her paper on the meaning of equality, law and jurisprudence in South Asia.
